My passion in life revolves around collecting old photographs. My second passion is photobooths. (Real ones, not Mac ones) Which is why I am currently planning a trip to Portland, Oregon. Ampersand is a gallery, bookstore and vintage heaven that collects, buys and sells anything photo, design or art. Their current show which opened last night and will run through August 23 is an exhibit of Robert E. Jackon's vintage photobooth collection.
I'm not sure i'll be making it over to Oregon for this show, but it has definitely gone on my list of things to do asap. The good thing about Ampersand is the fact that even though i'm far away, they sell vintage snapshots online for $5. I think I just maxed out my credit card.

Meet Liz Kaufman
I know I said I would "showcase" (man i have to think of a better word for that) one person a month that i know and who is very talented BUT Liz Kaufman was just interviewed at No Culture Icon, so hey, you get 2 in one day!
Congrats Liz, your interview was awesome!

The Mecca of Inspiration
When I was in school I had access to thousands of the most amazing photography books in the world. After graduating, and moving away from Rochester I was on my own. Michal Chelbin is one of my all time favorite photographers, whose work I have been obsessed with for a few years. Her book Strangely Familiar is the first photography book I ever purchased.
Meet Christina Szczupak
I graduated in May 2008 with a lot of very talented people. I've decided to "showcase" one (for lack of a better word) each month. Mostly so I can keep up to date on their work, and of course to introduce them to anyone who might not know them.
Meet Christina Szczupak.

Work Vs Play
The reason I went to photography school was to have my work be my play. Yes, yes, yes, i've been told you can't have your cake and eat it too. But what the hell does that mean anyways? If you have a cake, why not eat it?!?
The point is, i'm not working as a photographer right now. On the side? yes, slowly but surely. My day job though is much more work and much less play. So I thought about all the photographers we work with on a daily basis and wondered what it was they were doing "on the side". Here are a few.

Caring and Sharing
Today was an exceptionally awesome day. Besides work being insane for some reason I had some pretty epic surprises.
1)I found my favorite poem today while sorting through some new blogs i'm following. It's nice to see it somewhere when you're not expecting it, sort of like when you hear your favorite song on the radio instead of on your ipod. It's just chance, and it happened and it makes it that much more exciting. I cant remember what page it was on when i saw it, but here is where i found it.
nikki graziano and here is the poem.
in an effort to get people to look
into each other's eyes more,
and also to appease the mutes,
the government has decided
to allot each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.
When the phone rings, I put it to my ear
without saying hello. In the restaurant
I point at chicken noodle soup.
I am adjusting well to the new way.
Late at night, I call my long distance lover,
proudly say I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.
When she doesn't respond,
I know she's used up all her words,
so I slowly whisper I love you
thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.

2) While at work I received a care package. It consisted of a sweet picture note card promo, a homemade cd and a sweet tatt. thanks lyss ;)

Before and After
Yesterday morning at 11:30 I dropped Wendell off at the groomers. He is not a dog that enjoys a haircut. Imagine a surfer or hippie in the late 60's having to be tied down to have his ponytail cut off. That would be Wendell. I sat in the park nextdoor waiting for the call. It hit 3pm and I still hadn't heard a thing. Every horrible thing imaginable was going through my head. So I called and they said he was almost done. Finally, at 4:15pm I went in to get him back. They brought out a dog and I said, "Oh, no, that isn't my dog, sorry." to which the gentleman replied, "yeah it is." The teddybear that I had dropped off was now a naked little poodle rat. He's cute, for sure, but TOTALLY different. I never wanted my poodle to actually look like a poodle. But its summer and he sweats to death outside, so it has its up side. It's his summer do. I am a little embarassed now to walk him, and its harder to yell at him when he's bad because he seems so little and fragile now. I'm pretty sure the pits on the block are making fun of him too.

My head is a mad child scribbling circles
I have always been insanely jealous of people that could draw well. If someone were to offer me a magical power I would take it and then trade it for sweet drawing abilities. Practice makes perfect right? well, not in my case. I want it and I want it now. You can only imagine the butterflies that fluttered in my stomach when I came across an Edward Gorey drawing earlier today. It was posted by ambageeze and it looks like this ---->
That girl, she's a has been.
I feel like my graduating class has always been gypped. When I graduated from elementary school they put in a new playground. When I graduated from middle school they put in a goddamn greenhouse! When I graduated high school they put in a turf field and when I graduated college they started learning real life shit. I feel like such a old woman sometimes. It seems that every year they just know more and more. My first two years of college focused on film. Learning analog is an experience I would never trade. Having the skill to take a photograph, ACTUALLY knowing what you're doing instead of just looking at the back of your camera and adjusting well is a skill I am very proud to posses however, it's a skill that is very very rarely needed in my industry. Yes i can load 4x5 backs in the blink of an eye but open up illustrator and I'm a lost puppy. Knowing Adobe Creative Suite is the new knowing how to read for kids now. Just the other day I was riding the A train and a group of very high pitched high school girls got on. They were discussing their art class which involved photoshop. They were talking about blending modes that I learned my freshman year of college. I can photoshop like a pro, and have made some good money doing it but the rest of that stuff? It's never been a necessity so it was never in the curriculum. I'm old news people. I prefer crafting things by hand. Hand me some scissors and a pack of construction paper and I will go to town on making you the most kick ass calender you have ever seen. Give me indesign and I can't guarantee what you'll end up with.

Photo A Day_Day 3
I just told Wendell he's getting a haircut on Saturday. His last haircut didn't go so well. He turned into Cujo and tried to kill the 80 year old woman who was cutting his precious hair. Wish us luck.
Swoon.
I'll tumble for you.
Most of my friends do the 'tumblr' thang. So, like a good friend i'm posting there too for them (alyssa) to follow.

Babies! Babies! Babies!
This is probably one of the greatest things I have ever read. What a great idea, and such an awesome thing to receive from your parent (although most of it will probably be ignored until a certain age)

Reader Beware
I swore to myself that I would never blog. But it didn’t take long for me to realize I was an internetless blogger already. Constantly spitting out information (both useful and not) about anything and everything, spreading news, and ideas all fueled by the desire to inform and inspire.
Slowly but surely I become an avid blog reader. This pleasant pastime turned into a sick obsession. I was…and am, completely enthralled in the lives of strangers whose blogs I accidentally wandered to and fell in love with. What started off as a time passer when work lulled became an almost “emotional” connection for lack of a better term. I found myself getting excited when Jeremy surprised Kathleen with a murder mystery birthday party (jeremy and kathleen), jealous during Camp Comforts “How I’d Wear It” serious (amazing) (campcomfort )
and getting pretty upset when Ryan didn’t post photos quick enough of his beautiful new daughter Tessa (pacing the panic room ) So which is sicker? To invite strangers into your life? Or to be the stranger who cant get enough? Well, I’ve already been one, so why not the other? Hi, I’m Molly and I’m going to attempt to blog.
